Back to school! Friends, Field Trips, Projects……..Germs!

As kids are heading back to school this week, many mothers know it is just a matter of time before the first sick day arrives.  Here, in the desert, we’ve been back at school long enough that the initial excitement has worn off and our new routine no longer feels new.

School is great.  So much to learn, so many ways to grow, so many germs  to be shared.  In these few short weeks, I’ve already heard of both teachers and students taking sick days.  These school germs are all business.  We know that eating a balanced diet and getting enough rest helps all of us stay healthy.  The thing is …… have you met my kids?  If you have, then you probably know that one is a picky eater (I’m still not sure how that happened) and the other rarely sleeps past 5 am (seriously, not joking!).

Even though I work at home, the last thing I want is a phone call from the nurse telling me my kid is sick.  If you work outside of the home, I bet you get that phone call minutes before you are about to start a meeting.  Is there really anything we can do that can help prevent illness?  Well yes, I know there are things we can do to keep our kids healthy amidst the onslaught of school germs.  You know where this is going, right?

Essential oils!  They are my not-so-secret weapon.  Really, if they were a secret I certainly would not be blogging about them would I?  My kids get doused daily in as many ways as I can get the oils on them or in them.  To start, thieves is a mother’s best friend.  No mother should be without a bottle of this amazing oil.  You know how one kid gets sick, then the next, then it’s the adults turn?  That usually doesn’t happen in my house.  Wouldn’t it be better if when one person gets sick, you have something to kill airborne germs so that the entire household does not fold like a house of cards?  I know, silly question.  Of course we all want that.  There you go, thieves is your answer.  Diffuse it, wear it, ingest it and get on with your life.  It’s amazing!  So, step 1 is get thieves and use it.  Put it on their feet before school or put it on them before bed.  Just get it on them.  If my kids so much as sniffle, out comes my therapro diffuser (see here for the most awesomest diffuser ever and it comes with a 15 ml sized bottle of thieves – yay!).  Diffusing gives the kids a great dose of thieves while they are doing their homework or watching tv.  At the same time I’m killing airborne germs; it’s a total win-win.  Studies have shown that thieves kills lots of bad stuff.  Now I love studies but I know from experience that thieves works.  Proof is in the pudding and all you need is to be sick once and then feel better after using an essential oil as powerful as thieves to know this oil is the real deal.  You can see my testimonial page for how others have used thieves.  I can go on and on about thieves, actually I have!  If you put thieves in the search bar lots of posts will come up that go more into how I’ve used theives for cleaning, strep throat and much more.

Keeping sickness at bay is a good thing to start with but essential oils can do more than just that.  We use peppermint and lemon to help “wake up” their brains and to help them focus.  There are days when one or both of my kids do not like sitting down to do their homework (I’m sure they are the only ones out there with this problem).  I started using peppermint in the afternoon and it has really helped them focus so that they can get their work done much faster.  What a gift for all of us!  Studies have also shown that peppermint helps us to retain information. That will be handy come test time.  My daughter also loves to put lemon oil and orange oil in her (stainless steel) water bottle.  I love that because both oils will give her immune system a bit of a boost.  Take that, yucky germs!  My son (the picky eater) would never let me put lemon or orange oil in his water bottle but he does love Ningxia Red.  I freeze the individual packets and stick those in his lunch box.  Ningxia Red is a juice blend jam-packed with antioxidants and other nutrients that are a great support to the immune system and gives him a little energy boost for the rest of the afternoon.

In addition to all the wonderful, amazing, remarkable oils mentioned above I also like to give my kids something else to support them during the day.  Now, even though my kids are brilliant (I’m their mother, remember?) they have their off days – don’t we all?  Before they get on the bus I give each of them a drop of an oil called highest potential.  It is a great way to start the day.  I have seen my kids go from cranky and not wanting to leave the house to first one out the door with a drop of this oil.  Now that is a valuable tool to have at your disposal.  They each also have their favorite oils.  My son likes valor, which is a great oil, very grounding and perfect for a little boy in a big school.  My daughter loves stress away and joy.  Depending on her mood and what’s happening at school she usually picks one of these.  Stress away is great when she has to deal with challenging social moments and joy is just a great blend to enhance happiness.

There you go – thieves, peppermint, lemon, orange, valor, highest potential, stress away, joy,  ningxia red and don’t forget that awesome therapro diffuser.  Once you start using a diffuser you will wonder how you ever got by without it.  By the way, these oils are not just for the kids.  Oh, no!  Use them yourself and enjoy days with a little less stress and a little more energy.

If I say strep throat, you say…….

antibiotics, right?  Isn’t that what’s normally used to treat strep?  I know from experience that by not treating strep, complications can arise so it cannot go unattended.  Recently, I was having a busy week with a busy weekend coming up.  I woke up on Thursday with a bit of a sore throat and an achy head.  Thinking that it was allergies, I used some lavender by filling capsules and ingesting them.  The lavender helped a bit with the sinus issues but my throat and head were still bothering me.  The next day it was worse and, not wanting to admit that I was sick, I tried to brush it off.  I was determined not to let this, what ever it was, ruin my plans for the weekend.  By late afternoon, I began to realize that I did not have a choice.  I had a rash, I was tired, my throat hurt, my head hurt and I had a fever.  I was sick – Ugh!  Out the window went my weekend plans and into bed I went.

Strep is a bacterial infection.  I did not know that I had strep but I knew that my oils would help.  Essential oils have strong antibacterial (and antiviral) properties so I used a combination of oils which I applied on my throat and on my head.  I also diffused various oils and ingested them.  (If you have read any of my other posts, sorry for the repeat but….. ) I only recommend using and ingesting Young Living oils.  I say this over and over because it is really important for people to know that essential oils are not created equally.  It is important to know your supplier and their manufacturing practices.  You can see my “Why choose Young Living Oils?” page for more information about the quality of Young Living oils.

Please note that I am not a medical doctor and I am not prescribing a way to cure strep.  This is just what worked for me.

Here are my golden rules when using essential oils:

  1. Use what you have.  I used what I had on hand which was thieves, frankincense, melrose, panaway and a few others.  If I had oregano I would have used that as well.
  2. More is more (at least that is my philosophy with oils).  Throw everything you can at an illness as soon as you can.  I waited a bit too long to get started.  Next time I’m showing no mercy!
Thieves is your very best friend when you are sick or when you think you might be getting sick.  This is the blend you always want to have on hand.  I gargled with thieves, I diffused it, rubbed it on my throat and I ingested it.  If you want to make your own home remedy kit, this oil should be at the top of the list.  Actually, all the oils in the Everyday Oil Kit would make the list but if I had to narrow it down to just a few, thieves would be the chosen one.  Thieves contains clove (used by the dental industry for years to numb pain), cinnamon, rosemary & lemon.  It’s a highly antiviral, antibacterial blend.  Don’t even hesitate – just get it and, this is key, USE IT.  A friend of mine has a gland issue every so often that she regularly treated with a trip to the Dr. and a prescription of antibiotics.  After learning about thieves, I gave her a bottle which she quickly put in the back of a drawer (probably thinking it would never get used).  Months later, when her glands were acting up she dug it out and used it because she didn’t want to deal with being sick.  She was in the middle of a very important project and did not have the time to go to the doctor and then wait for the antibiotics to kick in.  Much to her surprise thieves did the trick!  You can use the link to see her testimonial.
I also used frankincense to help boost my immune system.  I put a few drops of thieves and a few drops of frankincense together in a capsule with a drop of extra virgin olive oil which I took 3-4 times per day.
Melrose is also very good for sore throats.  It has melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) and rosemary.  I gargled with melrose as well as used it on my neck.
Diffusing is really helpful when you want to make sure you don’t share what you have with other family members.  By diffusing thieves at night, I was able to inhale the oil while I slept.  Diffusing thieves also kills airborne germs.  On a side note, I love the Therapro diffuser, by far the best diffuser I have ever owned!  What’s even better is when you buy a Therapro from Young Living, you get a bottle of Thieves free – awesome!!!!!!  It is great to use a diffuser to scent your home but when you are sick or when you want to stop something before it gets bigger a diffuser is imperative.  When my kids look a bit rundown I add a bit of thieves to the diffuser and turn it on when they are watching t.v.  And if they are sick they get it in their room at night.  It always helps and it really is an important tool when using essential oils.

Of course, I got plenty of rest and drank lots of water.  I also took lots and lots of vitamin c as well as vitamin D, omega blues, Ningxia Red, and Life 5 probiotics.  The best part of having therapeutic oils on hand is that you don’t have to wait to go to a doctor in order to feel better.  When I realized I was sick early Friday evening, it was not a great time to see a doctor but I was still able to help myself start to feel better over the weekend.

Unfortunately, we can’t just run out to the store if we are sick and pick up a bottle of pure, therapeutic grade essential oil.  To find the best oils you have to go to the internet.  To find the very best, from a company  that is dedicated to quality and that has a large variety of singles and blends as well as personal care products and supplements then you have to order from Young Living.  If you wanted a good start for home remedies, my first choice would be the Everyday Oils Kit.  See my 3 part post starting with “A Natural Apothecary with Young Living Oils – Part I”.  The oils in that kit can be used for fevers, headaches, muscle pain, allergies, bug bites, bruises, burns, stress, sore throat, and as a sleep aid.  And those are just some of the uses for the oils.

Young Living May Promotions

Yay!!!  Young Living is offering a great promotion this month.  If you are not already using the Thieves cleaner now you can try it out for free!  I LOVE this cleaner.  The “normal” cleaners that you can buy in the stores have always given me headaches – even the “green” ones.  Since replacing all of my toxic cleaners with natural alternatives cleaning is a much more enjoyable endeavor.  I no longer get headaches, my house smells clean and, most importantly, I know that I have not added any unwanted toxins into my home.  I use the Thieves cleaner for everything, kitchen, bath, floors and it is the best laundry stain remover I have ever used.  It comes concentrated so just dilute to your needs.  We keep a couple of spray bottles around the house so we always have one at hand.  In addition to the Thieves cleaner I also use a combo of peroxide and baking soda when I need a scrub.  It is a great soft scrub replacement and I make it up as I need it.   I also use white vinegar and an essential oil, either lemon, orange or citrus fresh, for my windows and my dishwasher.  I have found diluting the Thieves cleaner with peroxide to be a great combo for really tough stains.  I have used it on my carpeting and was amazed at how well set in stains came out.  The Thieves cleaner is the best and safest cleaner for you and your family.  Replacing your toxic cleaners is one of the most important things you can do to really “clean” your home.

We also love the thieves spray when we get a sore throat.  My husband and I recently have put this spray to the test and we are convinced that it is a must have.  And citrus fresh is a great blend of citrus & spearmint.  It’s an uplifting, energizing clean scent.  One of my faves.

Another promotion this month is 10% off Abundance.  I don’t update my testimonials as often as I should but I do have a great one about abundance.  Here is the link.  We love this blend and both my husband and I use this one daily.

Also, click on the link below if you would like to hear a discussion about the Thieves cleaner as an alternative to store bought toxic cleaners. – Francine

A Natural Apothecary with Young Living Essential Oils – Part I

My husband had just left with the kids to run some errands, at least that was what I thought, when the door opened and  he came back in.  He had accidentally closed the car door on his hand which left a big gash on his thumb.  My first thought was to grab my oils and I ran for my lavender.  I could see he was in pain and the gash was nasty.  He rinsed his finger and put some pressure on it.  He was a bit resistant about using the lavender but he finally did relent and immediately I could see he felt some relief.  We put a few drops on, bandaged him up and off he went.  When he took the band-aid off later that day he was amazed at how nicely his wound was healing.  His comment to me was something like you need to tell everyone about this stuff!

This post is about using oils every day as an at-home apothecary for boo-boos and wrinkles and everything in between.  I invite you to leave comments about your favorite oils and how you use them.  All of these oils are safe to use on children unless otherwise noted.

I know I say this in every post but quality really does make a difference.  If you want therapeutic results than you have to use a therapeutic grade essential oil.  Otherwise, you may have a nice smelling oil without the therapeutic benefits.

From the Young Living website:

“The process Young Living uses when planting, cultivating, harvesting, and distilling a batch of oil is crucial to retaining its vital compounds. Without the exact blend of naturally-occurring plant chemicals, an essential oil can lose its beneficial properties and fail to produce the desired effect.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Young Living is able to make this assertion because of our strict cultivation process—illustrated by the Four Ps—that guarantees the optimal potency of every Young Living essential oil.”

The four P’s are – Plants, Preparation, Purity, Potency.  By planting the right plants, in the right place, distilling them at the right time and in the right way, testing every batch to insure purity and using the highest standards to maximize the effectiveness of the oil.  See this link for more details on YL’s four P’s.

Lavender – I have to start here because it is my go-to oil for injuries.  When in doubt, use lavender.  Lavender was used in WWII in field hospitals to relieve pain and speed up the recovery process.

  • Cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns – apply as quickly as possible and as often as needed
  • Calms the nervous system, aids better sleep, may help prevent snoring – rub on the back of the neck, the chest, the wrists or feet
  • Great for skin, stretch marks
  • Wrinkle recipe – 1 drop lavender, 1 drop lemon, 1 drop frankincense – use at night directly on face

Thieves – is a Young Living blend that has clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary.  It is an antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial combination that has been shown to kill mold more effectively than more traditional cleaners, like bleach.  What’s more, it’s not toxic.  Use to boost immunity and to prevent sickness.

  • Take internally when you think you might be coming down with something start with 3 drops in a capsule – add 2 drops of oregano if available
  • Rub on the bottom of the feet for general immunity
  • Take a drop on the tongue or add a drop or two to a small glass of water and gargle for a sore throat
  • Drop on the thumb and press to the roof of the mouth for a headache
  • Apply directly to warts or nail fungus

Valor - has become one of my favorite oils.  It is a great grounding blend and is known to support energy alignment in the body.  It can also quickly reduce swelling caused by injuries.

  • One drop on wrists or one on each foot to help align the body
  • Use with Harmony, Joy and White Angelica as part of the mood elevating protocol
  • Use as much as needed as quickly as possible on injuries like broken bones or “goose egg” bruises.  When my son broke his nose valor was the first oil I was able to put on him and I noticed a visible difference in the swelling after applying.  It’s truly remarkable to see.
  • also good to use for trauma, postpartum or grieving

These are just 3 of the 9 oils that are part of the everyday oils collection and of course, these are just a few of the ways you can use these oils to enhance a healthy lifestyle.

Last Night a Raindrop Saved My Life (sung to "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life")

Ok, so I wasn’t on death’s door so to speak BUT it kinda felt like it.  And, I don’t mean a raindrop as a drop of water falling from the sky, but I’ll tell you more about that in a bit.  My cute, adorable, charming son (aka darling germ magnet) came home with a cough last week that just did not want to leave no matter what I threw at him.  I pulled out my big guns, immupower, thieves, R.C., and while they helped he still went on to SHARE his new friend – lucky me!  So, now I have this lovely cough.  Now, you must understand one thing.  When I get a cough it is not pretty.  Really, not pretty.  If, and I pray, pray, pray that I don’t, but if, I cough in a public place I immediately clear a large area around me.  It’s a neat trick!  And, I get very concerned looks.  Very concerned.   I don’t blame them at all.  I sometimes look around after a coughing fit to make sure I haven’t lost a lung or something.  So I have this cough, and any time I want to breathe it’s not so fun.  But, hey, I’m an oiler and I’ve got the best stuff.

I start with R.C. for the congestion and it helps a bit.  I use immupower on my feet, man, can you say STINKY!  I’m sure the germs hightail it just to get away from the smell! Then I grab the thieves and oregano.  I put a couple of drops of each in a capsule to ingest and that helps.  In less than half an hour I feel better – yeah team oils!  Then horror of all horrors I realize I am out of thieves!  What?!  When my darling germ magnet began coughing I started diffusing it and putting it on everyone’s feet (everyone being the kids, obviously my feet missed the thieves boat this time around).

Ok so now I have a secret for you (don’t tell anyone, k?) – even us oilers get sick!  I know, that is just crazy, but it’s true.  But here is the really crazy part, since it doesn’t happen that often I always forget what to do!  I would like to say it’s because I’m sick and I have a couple of kids running around but it’s probably because I have always had a very laid back approach when I’m ill.  A sort of less is more, I’ll ride it out, the drugs are usually worse than the illness, kind of approach.  But, now that I have all these fabulous oils around, the trick is knowing how to use them.  That really is the key – using them.  Even though they sure do look pretty all lined up on my counter it’s about getting them in or on me that really makes the difference.

After having to hang up on a friend that I had not spoken to in years because of a scary sounding coughing fit I knew it was time to try something else.  I’d like to say that the raindrop idea was all my own, well I could, and no one would know any the better (except me of course), but it wasn’t.  I was on Facebook and Dr. Shelton (see Young Living Essential Oils and Pets for more on her) noted how after having a similar persistent cough a raindrop with lots of oils did the trick for them.  So when my husband walked in the door looking like CRAP and feeling worse I told him he was getting a raindrop.  Isn’t he the ever so lucky guy?  One of the reasons I love Young Living is that they have great promotions.  Every month if you buy a certain amount of product you can qualify for the free product for that month.  That is how we got our Raindrop Kit.  I have only done a raindrop on him once before so I am far from an expert.  But I have heard that the most important part is getting the oils on so that they can get to work.  So that is what I did.  I followed the directions in the Essential Oils Desk Reference guide and got them on him.  Of course he was super relaxed when it was all done and I felt a wee bit guilty asking him to throw the oils on my back but he did  (thanks, sweets!).  And you know what, we were better in the morning.  He looked better and he felt better too. I was able to take a deep breath without  it being followed by a 20 minute coughing fit and I am also getting rid of lots of lovely stuff.  I know, ewwww, soooo gross, sorry for the details.  So, yeah, it definitely helped.  I bet by now you are really wondering what is a raindrop?  Well, as you may have figured out (cause you are a clever one, aren’t you), a raindrop is sort of like a massage with essential oils.  Well, kind of.  The raindrop technique was developed by Gary Young and includes 9 different essential oils (oregano, thyme, basil, marjoram, wintergreen, peppermint, cyprus, aroma seiz, & valor) as well as a vegetable oil, like Young Living’s V-6 blend.  The oils are dropped along the spine and lightly worked into the back.  The oils used are highly antimicrobial and antiviral.  In my experience the effect of a raindrop can be very cleansing, sort of like a detox.  I highly recommend getting and giving a raindrop, they are unlike any other massage I have ever had.  I noticed as I was giving the raindrop I was feeling better just by handling and inhaling the oils. Even though we are not 100% yet, we are getting there.  I am also using a combo of oregano and thyme in a capsule with a drop of extra virgin olive oil and that gave both of us some quick relief as well.  I’ll do some more of those tomorrow and I’ll do another raindrop and hopefully we can kick this cough to the curb by the weekend.

The mighty power of Thieves. How Young Living Oils can help you survive the cold and flu season

When I started with Young Living I would constantly hear about the Thieves blend and how amazing it was.  Really, all the hype kinda bugged me.  Then I used the stuff and as they say “the proof is in the pudding”.   So what’s so great about thieves?  So glad you asked!

The Thieves blend has a great story behind it so let’s start there.  Back in the middle ages, during the plague, there were a bunch of spice merchants who were locked in a town.  Unable to move on to sell their spices elsewhere they went about robbing from the dead and the dying.  Once they were captured the king offered them a most generous deal – spill the beans on how they were able keep from getting sick and he would give them a quick death instead of a long slow painful one.  Very generous offer don’t you think?  So they told the king which herbs they used and the king posted the recipe for all to see.  The ingredients that those thieves used is now bottled by Young Living and is the basis for the entire Thieves line.

I know some people who use the Thieves blend nearly every day and who have not gotten any major cold or flu in years (Hi Mom!).  I use it on a seasonal and as-needed basis.  If the kids have a sneeze or a sniffle that I think might be the beginning of something, out comes the Thieves.  I will put a drop or two on their feet and I will diffuse it while they watch tv.  If I hear that there is something going around at their school, again, out comes the Thieves.  It is so much easier to put a drop on each foot before they get dressed for school than having them stay home because they are sick.  I use it if I feel the slightest hint of a sore throat.  Even if I were to get a full-blown flu I would want Thieves by my side because I know whatever I have will go away much, much faster with it than without it.

How do you use Thieves?

Put a couple of drops on your feet or, if you have a sore throat, on your neck as well.  Repeat as needed.   Once a day is fine for prevention but if you already have a bug use it as often as you can.

Diffuse, diffuse, diffuse!!!  If anyone in your home gets sick or if you want to prevent sickness in the first place, then the thing to do is to diffuse Thieves.  Why?  It is clinically proven to kill those nasty bugger germs.  So if one person gets sick you will be helping them to get better faster and you will be protecting the healthy ones from getting it.

Internal consumption – Thieves can be put directly on the tongue (can you handle the Thieves?!), it can be added to water or you can put a few drops in a capsule, size “00″, and ingest.  When fighting colds or the flu many people add oregano to the capsules as well.  I would start with 3 drops of oils and you could add olive oil to the capsule if you like.  Young Living also makes a supplement called Inner Defense which is Thieves plus oregano, thyme and a few other ingredients.  Another terrific blend!

I do not recommend consuming any other essential oils other than Young Living.  Please see my “Why choose Young Living” page for more details about oil quality.  Even if the label says it is “100% pure”  it probably isn’t the case.  Unless you know the company and trust its oils, do not consume them internally.

I talk about Thieves and mold in my Sept. 24th post “Why essential oils work best for mold” and I also talk about the Thieves cleaning products in the “How dirty is your soap?” post from Sept. 9th.

Young Living has a fantastic promotion going on until the end of October.  If you place an order of 175pv in merchandise, Young Living will send you a 15ml bottle of Thieves as well as a Thieves hand sanitizer and a Thieves spray.  Please see the “Monthly Promotions” page for details.  Also, please see the “How to order Young Living Oils” page if you would like to get started with Young Living.

Here’s to hoping you and yours stay healthy this cold and flu season.

Why Essential Oils Work Best For Mold

I found this on the Young Living Blog.  Dr. Close wrote the book “Nature’s Mold RX,  The non-toxic solution to your toxic mold”

As a scientist, I ask a lot of questions and have a natural curiosity about why things work the way they do. When I first heard that essential oils were nature’s original medicine, I was skeptical. Even though my family had experienced definite benefits from their usage, I was not fully satisfied with the answers I heard about why essential oils should work in the human body. Young Living Founder Gary Young said that essential oils are the lifeblood of the plant, but while I can see that essential oils serve a similar purpose in plants as blood does in the human body, we are not plants. So why should oils distilled from plant materials be so beneficial to human beings? Gary pointed out that essential oils carry vital nutrients to cells, cleanse cells and receptor sites, and oxygenate the blood. I was intrigued and I could see that, due to their ability to transport oxygen into the system, essential oils might have effects similar to hyperbaric treatments which provide oxygen to cells and tissues to reduce pain and promote rapid healing.

Why do essential oils work so well for humans? To my surprise, studying mold-related illness and understanding why oils are so effective against mold and bacteria has supplied the answer to this question. Consider this: When a living organism dies, mold along with other microorganisms attack the body to break it down into compounds for food. This is a natural process that continually recycles organic materials on our planet. The difference between mold and the scavengers we usually think of, like vultures, is that molds (fungi) do not care whether you are alive or dead—they are attacking you all the time. Right now, in fact, they are doing what they do best, trying to reduce your body to useable food stuff!

Why are essential oils so beneficial and work so well in and on our bodies? They are the plants’ natural immune system! They destroy microorganisms that destroy plants, and those same microorganisms can do us great harm. I am continuing to collect scientific data on the results of using essential oils to eliminate bacteria and mold. That data, collected over the past five years, provides scientific evidence that Young Living essential oils are the best defense available against toxic mold and mold-related illnesses.

How dirty is your soap? Young Living Essential Oils can help you clean up.

Without much effort on my part, I seem to find information about the chemicals and toxins that are in our everyday products.  The more I read about it the more I’m blown away – they are everywhere.  Chemicals are in our food and water, our personal care products, televisions, computers, mattresses and clothing.  I could keep going but I think you get the idea.  More and more studies are showing how prevalent these chemicals are in our lives and how they are having many undesired effects.  I would rather not make myself crazy about all the “Chemicals” that are everywhere and in everything that we touch.  So I do what I can for myself and my family.  I eat organic as much as possible, limit processed foods, stay away from all commercial cleaners and air “fresheners” (try more like carcinogenic pollutants) and I avoid using antibacterial anything, including soaps.  Why do I bother?  Because I am more than concerned by how common these chemicals are and how we really don’t know what they do to us.  Here is a great video called “The Story of Cosmetics”.  In it, Annie Leonard explains her theory of “toxins in, toxins out.”  If we put toxic chemicals in our products, we will get toxic chemicals in our bodies.  Even small but regular exposure to everyday products means we’re ingesting chemicals like lead, mercury, fire-retardants and triclosan.  Ms. Leonard also goes on to explain how the industry self-regulates and that putting “natural’ or “organic” on a label can mean absolutely nothing.  Manufacturers are permitted to put just about whatever they want on a label, even when it may have no relation to what is actually in the bottle.

I recently learned about a chemical called triclosan that is found in over 700 different personal and household consumer products.  These include toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, and antibacterial soap.  Triclosan is also used in products like children’s toys, bedding, trash bags, cutting boards and yoga mats.  You will most likely find it in anything that is marketed as “Antibacterial”.  You might think that a chemical that is in such wide use would have been thoroughly researched by the FDA.  Not the case with triclosan.  This past July, the National Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit against the FDA for not properly regulating triclosan and triclocarban, a related substance.  Here is a very informative file from the NRDC titled “Not Effective and Not Safe:  The FDA Must Regulate Dangerous Antimicrobials In Everyday Products”

Research has shown that triclosan is not effective in preventing sickness (surprise!), which would be funny if research also didn’t show that it has been linked to a number of human health problems.  These problems included increased risk of respiratory illness, such as asthma, cancer and even subtle effects on learning.   Some researchers are concerned that triclosan may be a potential endocrine disruptor and that it may interfere with the body’s thyroid hormone metabolism.  Triclosan is also a chemical that builds up in fatty tissues over prolonged use which is apparently why it is found in human milk and in the urine of 75% of the population.  Unsettling, considering we don’t actually eat it.  There’s an environmental impact as well.  Chemicals such as triclosan are getting into our water supply.  Researchers are finding them in rivers and in the fish that swim in those rivers.  For more information on triclosan and tricolcarban, please see the Beyond Pesticides website.   I also found an informative Washington Post article, “FDA says studies on triclosan, used in sanitizers and soaps, raise concerns” on that same site.

Another alarming study shows a link between breast cancer, cleaning products and air fresheners.  The study found that women who were exposed to the highest combined use of cleaning products and air fresheners were more likely to have breast cancer than women who were not exposed.  The study can be found here.  Many disagree with the study because the participants, 787 women with breast cancer and 721 controls, were “asked about product use, beliefs about breast cancer etiology, and established and suspected breast cancer risk factors.”  The researchers acknowledge that there is some bias but also state that “exposure to chemicals from household cleaning products is a biologically plausible cause of breast cancer and  is avoidable”.  I hope more research will be done soon but in the mean time why wait for scientists to tell us what the indicators are pointing to.  Why not throw out the toxic “cleaners” and start using natural and safe alternatives immediately?  You can even make your own!  Simply google “natural cleaning recipes” to find some great cleaning products you can make yourself.  Check out this interesting article from the New York Times about how we don’t need toxic chemicals to clean: The Claim: Cinnamon Oil Kills Bacteria

-In a country obsessed with germs and sickness, “antibacterial” soaps and sanitizers are becoming more and more common.  But because such products contribute to the growing problem of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, some researchers recommend sanitizers made with cinnamon oil, which has been shown in many studies to have powerful antimicrobial properties.  A recent study by a team of surgeons, for example, found that a solution made with cinnamon oil killed a number of common hospital-acquired infections, like streptococcus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. The study found it was just as effective as several antiseptics widely used in hospitals.  Another study by French researchers in 2008 had similar results, showing that at concentrations of 10 percent or less, cinnamon oil was effective against Staphylococcus, E. coli and several antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria.  Dr. Lawrence D. Rosen, a pediatrician in New Jersey who dispenses natural health advice on his blog,, recommends a tried-and-true recipe for hand sanitizer called thieves oil. “I add cinnamon bark, lemon oil and eucalyptus,” he said, noting that “the recipe goes back to the Middle Ages, where it was used by these thieves who would go around stealing jewelry from dead bodies, and they never got sick.”

Cinnamon oil, when applied topically, is generally safe.  But in some people it can cause an allergic reaction.-

This is a no brainer.  Why would I use toxic chemicals when I can use products that are safe and natural and smell a lot better?  It really isn’t that hard to get started.  The first step is to get rid of all of your old cleaners.  You don’t even have to throw them in the trash right this minute, just replace them with natural products when they run out.  If you are interested in trying the Thieves blend, Young Living also has a great Start Living with Thieves Kit to get you started.  Note in the article when the pediatrician mentioned the Thieves recipe goes back to the Middle Ages and it kept the thieves from getting ill as they were robbing plague victims.  I consider the Thieves essential oil blend my “secret” weapon.  When the kids started school this year within the first week my daughter had a cough and my son had some sniffles.  I pulled out my Thieves, put some on their feet and I also diffused it while they were watching tv.  The cough and the sniffles went away the next day.  I’ve used it for sore throats, headaches and any time I feel like I am getting sick.  With the cold and flu season approaching now is a perfect time to supply yourself with this versatile essential oil blend.  As you will see, the kit has everything you need to get started.

The kit contains:

Young Living Essential Oils, how they work and why we should use them.

Many people know what essential oils look like.  For example,  you see them in the health food store and they smell good, but most are not sure where they come from or what to do with them.  What are essential oils?  Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, stems,  and flowers of plants or they can come from the resin of trees.  The oils contain hundreds of natural organic compounds.  Essential oils are the immune system of the plant.  They protect the plant from bacteria, mold and viruses.  They also carry oxygen and nutrients to the plant cells.  Lucky for us, essential oils do the same for humans and animals.  Essential oils can be applied topically, either diluted or neat.  They can also be inhaled and ingested.  No matter how you use the oils they will be quickly taken up into the blood stream and go to work.  Many people feel instant relief when a pure therapeutic grade essential oil is used, even if the pain does not go away entirely at first, the pain will decrease significantly in time.  For example, the other day I had a bit of an upset stomach, which I rarely have, and I put a single drop of peppermint in my water.  I felt relief with one sip and my stomach felt normal long before I finished the bottle.  When using essential oils it is so important to know the quality of the oils.  I only  use Young Living Essential Oils because I know they are pure therapeutic grade oils.  Before you ingest any oil please be certain that the oil is pure and is safe to do so.

The plant matter is put in a stainless steel cylinder with steam running up from the bottom.  On the Young Living Farm in Mona, Utah, the cylinder is about 20 feet tall and 8 feet across.  The plant is packed into the cylinder in a way so that the most material can be processed while still allowing the steam to easily flow up through the distiller.  The steam draws out the oil and it is taken out through the top .  The steam is cooled and the oil separates from the water.   How much oil do you get?  It differs from plant to plant.  If there was roman chamomile in the distiller you would only get 1/4-1/2 cup of essential oil.  This is why a small bottle of oil may cost $30 or more but when you stop and think about how effective one drop is then you begin to see how economical they really are.  When you have a pure  oil, one drop of that pure oil can do more good than many drops of an adulterated and diluted oil.  Rose oil is a very expensive oil because  it takes at least 5,000 pounds of rose petals to make 1 pound of rose oil.  It takes 3 tons of melissa to distill one pound of oil!  It takes a lot of material to make a small amount of oil but the oil that we get is very concentrated and one drop goes a long way.  For instance, one drop of peppermint oil is the equivalent of 28 cups of peppermint tea!  We live in the desert and my husband and I have been enjoying putting one drop of peppermint in our water bottles.  It keeps us cool, it’s energizing and it tastes really good (also note the soothing stomach upset benefit mentioned above).  One drop in 32 oz of water is effective and economical.  I know it is a pure oil it is safe for us to ingest.  Please see my “Why Choose Young Living Essential Oils” page to learn more about what to look for in a pure oil.

Why Use Essential Oils?

In my opinion, this is such an important question to ask!  Why use essential oils when we can go to the store and buy a whole assortment of drugs that can take care of this pain or that ailment.  Plants are studied all the time for their healing abilities.  Researchers isolate the one or two compounds in the plant that they believe are responsible for the healing effect then synthetically reproduce those compounds in a lab to be packaged as a pharmaceutical.  The problem is that the compounds that make up an essential oil work synergistically.  The essential oils contain hundreds of compounds that attack viruses and bacteria without doing any harm to the person.  I love those drug ads (ok, not really) that show you a person suffering from a condition, looking miserable, until the wonder drug is introduced.  Then, all smiles.  My favorite part comes at the end of the commercial where someone mentions all the possible side effects (while speaking so fast you can hardly understand what they are saying).  We’ve all heard them before: constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, strokes and yes, even death.  Of course those are just a few of possible side effects from synthetic pharmaceuticals.

Let’s also talk about the overuse of drugs.  Allopathic medicine treats symptoms.  Often a patient is prescribed a drug to treat specific symptoms.  The patient experiences side effects when taking the drug.  The doctor prescribes another drug to relieve the side effects.  Then another, and another.  I think the only people who could possibly be happy about this scenario are the drug companies.  The other problem is the over prescribing of antibiotics.  I just read an article, “Are you ready for a world without antibiotics?”, on The Guardian website.  Because antibiotics are synthetic and made in a lab, they have to be standardized.  The microorganisms that are targeted by these drugs have developed immunity, hence they are referred to as “super bugs” .  In the article, Professor Tim Walsh states: “We have a bleak window of maybe 10 years, where we are going to have to use the antibiotics we have very wisely, but also grapple with the reality that we have nothing to treat these infections with.”  As a powerful alternative, we have essential oils.  The oils are not standardized because they come from plants and trees that grow in different conditions and locations all over the world.  It is much more difficult for the microbes to develop immunity to them.  In fact, studies have shown that essential oils are effective in fighting super bugs as noted in this article from Science Daily, “Essential Oils to Fight Super Bugs”.  The article notes the essential oils of thyme and cinnamon are very effective in  eliminating bacteria.  ”Not only are essential oils a cheap and effective treatment option for antibiotic-resistant strains, but decreased use of antibiotics will help minimise the risk of new strains of antibiotic resistant micro-organisms emerging,” said Professor Samaras.  I feel even better using essential oils knowing that I am tapping into natural sources that will ultimately be more effective than synthetic drugs.

My very good friend has a gland condition that pops up whenever she is stressed and tired.  Her usual treatment is to get a round of antibiotics from her doctor.  About 10 months ago, when it last came up I gave her a bottle of Thieves (an essential oil blend) and told her to use it next time her throat felt sore.  Of course, she promptly put it in the back of a drawer and forgot about it until about a month ago.  She was in the middle of a very important project and her throat was beginning to really bother her.  She didn’t want to deal with calling the doctor, getting the prescription, then waiting for the drugs to kick in.  She dug out the bottle, put some on her throat and feet at bedtime, and awoke feeling much better.  She used more Thieves and no longer needed to call her doctor for a prescription.  She is quite familiar with this condition and knows that if she doesn’t get the antibiotics, it gets worse.  It was nothing short of a “miracle”.  Those were her words, not mine.  I believe a lot of time and money can be saved by using just a few drops of select oils.

I have young kids, ages 5 and 7.  Before I began using the oils, I would use over the counter meds, like Tylenol, only when I felt I really needed them.  If the kids had a fever and were comfortable, I would let them be unless they couldn’t sleep, in which case I would give them the meds.  I recently found an article on Reuters UK about “Acetaminophen tied to childhood wheezing and allergies” – Yikes!!!  There needs to be more studies but it seems that the use of Tylenol in children under 1 can lead to allergic nasal  congestion and eczema as well as asthma.  They are not ready to advise not using children’s Tylenol but my thoughts as a parent is why wait to find out and at the least minimize usage.  Essential oils can be used on infants safely, and my children now prefer the oils when they have a bruise or a fever.  I also find the oils work much faster than waiting the 20 minutes for the Tylenol to kick in.  Myrtle, lemon, lavender, Valor, Gentle Baby and Peace & Calming are all oils that can be used on infants and children for either bumps, burns, cuts, fevers and fussiness.  Basically, there is an oil for every ailment, it’s just a matter of finding the right one.

Using essential oils is just one part of a healthy lifestyle.  I think we all want  balance in our lives and many times we need a bit of  help to maintain that balance.  Using essential oils can help to ease pain, headaches, soothe sores, aid sleep, they can help restore harmony to the body in a safe, natural and effective way.  I know we can use less drugs, those that are over the counter as well as prescription, if only more people knew of the power of pure, therapeutic grade essential oils.

Young Living Essential Oils, Kids & Parenting

When I first started using Young Living oils over 10 years ago it was because I fell in love with the scent of pure essential oils.  Once I smelled the blend Joy for the first time I never wore perfume again – ever.  My nose could no longer accept synthetic scents and my only choice was to use pure essential oils or nothing.  Even though I enjoyed the oils, I wasn’t sure how to use them and without all the information that is now available thanks to the internet I stopped using them for a number of years.  My mother who started with the oils when I did, continued to use them and benefit from them.  Every so often I would have her get me a bottle of Gentle Baby or Lavender to keep on hand.

Last year when my kids were 3 and 6 years old we were having a hard time getting them to settle down for the night.  We lived in Brooklyn, NY at the time and although I love city living it is a bit more stressful for everyone, including kids.  I was using lavender at night, putting it on their wrists or on their pillows and at first there was a bit of resistence but in time they enjoyed the new bedtime routine.  Then one night I realized I ran out of lavender, actually I think I just misplaced it, but either way it was gone.  It was time for bed and my son was not interested in going to sleep.  My mother, wonderful person that she is, had given me a bottle of Peace and Calming which was sitting on the shelf.  Now, to be honest, Peace and Calming was not my favorite scent so I was a bit unsure about using it but I needed to try something so I put it on my wrists and walked into my sons room and waved my arms around a bit.  In less than 60 seconds he finished getting dressed for bed and got into bed with a book.  It all happened so fast my husband and I looked at each other in amazement and that was when I knew these oils were something altogether different.  I had in my hands something that could soothe my kids in a safe and effective way and it was practically instantaneous.  WOW!

Now when they are hurt or upset they ask for the oils.  In the last year I have used Gentle Baby to soothe tired and cranky children, again with very fast results.  I’ve  used peppermint to cool a fever so my son could get back to sleep.  And I’ve used lavender over and over again for bumps, bruises, burns, cuts & bug bites.  The oils have slowly but surely become a part of our life, a life that I feel better about.  As my collection of oils has grown, our medicine cabinets have become more and more sparse.  We have children’s motrin if we should need it but we haven’t needed it in quite a while.  I will always see a Doctor if my kids are sick but I will also use my oils and I find that when they do get sick, as they will from time to time, an oil like Thieves is amazing in helping them get better faster and keeps the rest of us from getting it.  Big yeah for that!

When I tell people I use essential oils sometimes I get a certain look.  Like they are trying to figure out if I am for real or not, kind of like they heard what I just said but don’t really understand what I mean.  I don’t blame them because I know so many people simply do not understand what these oils can do.  There are so few places to get pure essential oils and the stuff they sell in the stores is often not pure so it makes sense that most have no idea of the power of therapeutic grade essential oils.  What I love, love, love is when someone jumps in and tries them.  I love getting that phone call, the “Oh my God”  phone call.  The “I used this on that and it worked so fast” phone call.  Because even though they hear what I’m saying or read the studies or whatever I think most people do not expect these oils to work the way that they do and when they do – wow!  Are the oils for everyone?  Nothing is for everyone but if you are looking for a way to take care of yourself, your family, even your pets, using less chemicals and more natural products than you may very well be looking for these oils.

From the moment I conceived my first child, and I have two now, I have been concerned about what “touched” them.  What foods, what TV shows, what schools they went to – and I know at times I have probably been too concerned over some things and not concerned enough about others – hey, that’s just parenting for you.  When I started with the oils, though I used caution, I felt like I found something that I could use that wasn’t tainted.  So often we discover that a product that might be good for you one minute, may turn out to be avoided like the plague the next.  With essential oils I am not using some faddish, new & improved product.  I’m using natural plants.  This stuff has been around for thousands of years.  There are over 1oo biblical references of essential oils , the Egyptians wrote formulas in hieroglyphics, tomb raiders left jewels and stole the oils because that is how valuable they were.  So I’m not worried that a report is going to come out next week that tells me that Frankincense is bad for me, actually a report will probably be coming out about how good it is for me.  I am cautious, I check which oils are ok for kids and in the last year every time I’ve used the oils on them it has been a positive experience.  Just the other day, my daughter was playing with a changing room door and smashed her finger.  She was quite upset and in a fair amount of pain and anyone nearby knew it, but as I put the oil on and asked her if it felt better she was still fussing a bit but it wasn’t because of her pain.  She was still in the mode of expressing her pain but her pain was no longer there.  Once she got it, that the pain was gone, she was up and out the door and ready to jump in the pool.  No need for ice, no swelling – I’ve never seen kids heal as fast and get over the upset and move on as when I use the oils.

As a parent I’ve noticed that when I’m feeling stressed, my kids can take on that stress.  I try, and sometimes I even succeed, to reduce my stress before it grows bigger and bigger.  I grab an oil and it is such a relief.  It makes me stop and smell something wonderful, that alone will reduce stress, but then all the amazing constituents get into my blood stream and get to work.  It is, hands down, one of the biggest benefits of using the oils.  They are easy to carry around, so I always have a couple of oils on hand, and when I need them I am so happy to have them because they work – fast.  Whatever your need is – easing stress, pain relief, more focus – there is an oil that can satisfy that need at anytime.
