Young Living March Promotions

Young Living is offering a 5 ml bottle of PanAway and an 8 oz bottle of Ortho-Ease this month with a 190 pv order.  When we have our aches and pains we reach for  PanAway and Ortho-Ease.  I use PanAway after I run if I have any soreness or if my ankle starts to hurt, which happens sometimes.  I also like to use both PanAway and Ortho-Ease if I have any neck and shoulder pain like I had this week.  I like to use them together because PanAway is great for spot pain relief and Ortho-Ease is great when you have a larger area to cover like the back or legs.  I also love using PanAway for headaches.  By the way, PanAway is one of the oils in the everyday oils kit.

If you really want to know what essential oils can do and you want to know more about the science behind essential oils please listen to this talk with Toby Palmer and Marc Schreuder.  Marc is the Director of Product Formulation at Young Living and talks about PanAway, Ortho-ease, and Australian Blue.  I have not tried Australian Blue but after hearing Marc Schreuder talk about it I’m looking forward to getting it this month.  It’s a 15 minute conversation that is worth listening to.

A Natural Apothecary with Young Living Essential Oils – Part II

This is the second of a three-part series.  Please note that when I speak of ingesting an essential oil, I am talking about ingesting only Young Living essential oils.  I would never recommend any other brand of essential oil.  If you would like to read Part I please check it out here.

Peppermint – I love this oil!  It is hard to pick favorites but if I had to, peppermint would be in my top ten.  It is one of my first-aid oils so I always have some on hand.  One drop of peppermint oil is equal to 28 cups of peppermint tea!  Essential oils are so concentrated, which is why one drop can be so effective.  For more information on how peppermint oil has been shown to reduce the symptons of I.B.S see this post.  Studies have also shown that by smelling peppermint you will feel more satiated after a meal.  Smelling peppermint will also help to soothe any feelings of nausea.

  • In water.  One drop (seriously, that is all you need) in a 32 oz bottle of water.  I keep used glass juice bottles around and use them to keep oil flavored waters on hand.  Peppermint is my favorite flavor for water.  It cools in the summer, soothes upset stomachs quickly and tastes sooooooo good.
  • Fever reducer.  When my son awoke in the middle of the night uncomfortable with a fever he said no to medicine but yes to oils.  I put 1-2 drops of peppermint oil on each foot and in less than 10 minutes his fever was dropping and he was able to get back to sleep (and so did I!).
  • One drop in your hand , rub hands together and inhale deeply….aaahhhhhhhhh!  Helps with sinus troubles and can also help with mental clarity and focus.
  • A drop across the brow can alleviate headaches.  Why use an oil over headache meds?  Oils work faster.  Really.  Way faster.  It’s very cool.

Peace & Calming – This is the oil that really got me started on Young Living.  My kids were having a hard time settling down at night and I was in need of some help.  My mother (aren’t mothers the best?) gave me a bottle of Peace & Calming.  Honestly, this was not my favorite scent (I do love it now) but reluctantly I gave it a try.  Long story short, after witnessing a miracle ( yes, it was!) when my kids finally fell asleep, I ran to my computer to see if I could order a vat of this stuff.

  • Peace & Calming. Knocks. Me. Out.  If I can’t sleep or have a chatty mind at bedtime, a drop on my neck or wrists or even on my feet will do the trick.  My kids love this oil (it was made for kids) and they drift off to sleep much faster when we use it.
  • Eases anxiety and can be used if you are stressed.
  • Can soothe cranky or hyper children.  I have seen my kids go from cranky to calm with just a drop or two.  If you have young kids you want this oil.  It’s amazing!

PanAway - Rocks!  If you have any pain, this is an oil that you want.  It is a blend that has wintergreen, helichrysum, clove and peppermint.  What do these oils do?  They will help reduce pain and inflammation, increase circulation and accelerate healing.  They will relieve swelling and discomfort from arthritis, sprains, and muscles spasms.  The two main ingredients in Bengay are methyl salicylate, which is wintergreen, and menthol, which is synthetic peppermint oil.  So why use the diluted, synthetic version for pain relief when you can use the pure undiluted essential oil?  Yeah, I have no idea why you would want to either.

  • Apply directly on area of pain – it doesn’t get much easier than that. If you have sore muscles, sciatica, arthritis or any kind of muscle or ligament pain.  Apply liberally.
  • Use across the brow or on the temples for headache relief.
  • Can also be used on pets to reduce arthritic pain.

Of course, these are just a few suggestions for what to do with these oils.  You can use Young Living oils in so many different ways, everyday.  Part of the fun is finding out what the oils can do for you.

Part III will be coming soon.  I would LOVE to hear how you use your favorite essential oils (hint, hint – some feedback please!)

A Natural Apothecary with Young Living Essential Oils – Part I

My husband had just left with the kids to run some errands, at least that was what I thought, when the door opened and  he came back in.  He had accidentally closed the car door on his hand which left a big gash on his thumb.  My first thought was to grab my oils and I ran for my lavender.  I could see he was in pain and the gash was nasty.  He rinsed his finger and put some pressure on it.  He was a bit resistant about using the lavender but he finally did relent and immediately I could see he felt some relief.  We put a few drops on, bandaged him up and off he went.  When he took the band-aid off later that day he was amazed at how nicely his wound was healing.  His comment to me was something like you need to tell everyone about this stuff!

This post is about using oils every day as an at-home apothecary for boo-boos and wrinkles and everything in between.  I invite you to leave comments about your favorite oils and how you use them.  All of these oils are safe to use on children unless otherwise noted.

I know I say this in every post but quality really does make a difference.  If you want therapeutic results than you have to use a therapeutic grade essential oil.  Otherwise, you may have a nice smelling oil without the therapeutic benefits.

From the Young Living website:

“The process Young Living uses when planting, cultivating, harvesting, and distilling a batch of oil is crucial to retaining its vital compounds. Without the exact blend of naturally-occurring plant chemicals, an essential oil can lose its beneficial properties and fail to produce the desired effect.

Young Living Therapeutic Grade (YLTG) means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Young Living is able to make this assertion because of our strict cultivation process—illustrated by the Four Ps—that guarantees the optimal potency of every Young Living essential oil.”

The four P’s are – Plants, Preparation, Purity, Potency.  By planting the right plants, in the right place, distilling them at the right time and in the right way, testing every batch to insure purity and using the highest standards to maximize the effectiveness of the oil.  See this link for more details on YL’s four P’s.

Lavender – I have to start here because it is my go-to oil for injuries.  When in doubt, use lavender.  Lavender was used in WWII in field hospitals to relieve pain and speed up the recovery process.

  • Cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns – apply as quickly as possible and as often as needed
  • Calms the nervous system, aids better sleep, may help prevent snoring – rub on the back of the neck, the chest, the wrists or feet
  • Great for skin, stretch marks
  • Wrinkle recipe – 1 drop lavender, 1 drop lemon, 1 drop frankincense – use at night directly on face

Thieves – is a Young Living blend that has clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus radiata, and rosemary.  It is an antimicrobial, antiviral, antibacterial combination that has been shown to kill mold more effectively than more traditional cleaners, like bleach.  What’s more, it’s not toxic.  Use to boost immunity and to prevent sickness.

  • Take internally when you think you might be coming down with something start with 3 drops in a capsule – add 2 drops of oregano if available
  • Rub on the bottom of the feet for general immunity
  • Take a drop on the tongue or add a drop or two to a small glass of water and gargle for a sore throat
  • Drop on the thumb and press to the roof of the mouth for a headache
  • Apply directly to warts or nail fungus

Valor - has become one of my favorite oils.  It is a great grounding blend and is known to support energy alignment in the body.  It can also quickly reduce swelling caused by injuries.

  • One drop on wrists or one on each foot to help align the body
  • Use with Harmony, Joy and White Angelica as part of the mood elevating protocol
  • Use as much as needed as quickly as possible on injuries like broken bones or “goose egg” bruises.  When my son broke his nose valor was the first oil I was able to put on him and I noticed a visible difference in the swelling after applying.  It’s truly remarkable to see.
  • also good to use for trauma, postpartum or grieving

These are just 3 of the 9 oils that are part of the everyday oils collection and of course, these are just a few of the ways you can use these oils to enhance a healthy lifestyle.

Just go green now!

I read this post on CNN and watched a clip of Dr. Sanjay Gupta addressing the Senate Subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics and Environmental Health.  I’m excited that the Senate is finally hearing about this very important issue.  I feel that our environment is overloaded and overburdened with toxic chemicals.  Unfortunately, this is happening because having “regulations would infringe on profitability” for the manufactures!!!!  Ok, I’m holding back on the rant at the moment, but really??  UGH!?

There are things we can do right now to get toxic chemicals out of our lives.  Believe it or not our home environments are among the most toxic.  Start with your cleaners and air fresheners and toss them out.  It is easier and cheaper to make your own.  White vinegar, cinnamon oil, lemon juice all can be used to clean just as well as your store-bought name brand cleaners.  And of course I love my Thieves cleaner.  It smells good, it’s safe and it’s effective.  In my September 9th post  “How dirty is your Soap?  Young Living Essential Oils can help you clean up.” I talk about this subject with links to studies and other websites.

This quote from Dr. Sanjay Gupta really resonated with me, ” What we don’t know can really hurt us and there is a lot that we don’t know.”

Here is the link to the CNN article, “Everyday chemicals may be harming kids, panel told”

I got the secret sauce!

Most of the posts on this blog are based on studies or newspaper articles showing how essential oils can help us live a healthier life.  All of that is really important to me but, at the end of the day, what matters to me most is my family.  When I do something or find something that helps my family I feel like I have done my job well.  I feel like I got the brass ring so to speak.

Just over two weeks ago my son, who is 5 years old, fell at school while he was at recess and broke his nose.  Thanks to the lousy reception I get on my phone I did not get any messages for some time.  There I am at the gym just getting into a run on the treadmill, thinking of going a bit longer than usual, when I finally get a text from my husband saying he is on his way to urgent care. Needless to say I’m in my car in 60 seconds driving 5 mph in the pouring rain (Seriously???? I live in the desert!!!! ).

I get there and they are in x-ray so I have to wait a few more minutes.  It’s been almost 2 hours since the accident and it is such a relief for all of us, me, my husband and my son when I finally do see him.  I give him a big hug and just hold him for a bit, and when we were all settled I took out my "secret sauce".  On my drive up I was trying to remember what essential oils I had with me and I was hoping that I had lavender because that has worked so well with bruises and swelling in the past.  When I opened my bag I realized all I had was a bottle of valor.  When I was at convention Dr. Minke noted how good valor was for bruises and swelling so I had faith in it even though I had not used it before for that purpose.  Immediately, and I really mean immediately, after putting a drop, maybe two, ofvalor on his face, both my husband and I could see that some of the swelling went down.

There really isn’t anything they can do for a broken nose, they don’t set it and there is no cast to help it mend.  After trying to give him some Tylenol, which he has never liked, they said there was nothing else they could do.  It was too late for ice, which he would not have taken anyway, so we finished the paper work and headed home. Over the next week I went on to use either valor, lavender or copaiba on him when ever I could.  Basically, I used whatever I had near him when I thought about it.  Of course, it took some time for all the swelling to go and of course he did get some purple bruises around his eyes.  But, in less than two weeks his nose had set and the Dr. said it would take about 4.  His teachers, the ENT Dr., the nurses and many others have all commented on how quickly he has healed and how surprised they were that the swelling and bruising weren’t worse.  I smile and say to myself – I got the secret sauce!

9/22/10 I put some more oil on him when we got home.

9/26/10 Out for some gelato with his big sister.  Note the dark spots on his nose, cheeks and chin are chocolate not bruising!           10/6/10 All better and as cheeky as ever!

Keep your home and family safe with these simple tips:

Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier

In today’s busy society, more and more time is spent outside the home where germs and bacteria exist on almost every surface. Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier is designed to clean and refresh the hands whenever water or washing facilities are not available. It contains the powerful Thieves Essential Oil blend to purify, and moisturizing ingredients to prevent dry skin.

While there are a number of portable hand cleaners on the market, most contain antibiotic and synthetic ingredients that kill bacteria. The simplistic nature of synthetic ingredients causes bacteria to develop a resistance and often produces offspring that are completely resistant to antibiotic treatment. The answer to this resistance lies within essential oils, particularly those contained in Thieves. It’s an easy, safe, and effective way to help protect you and your family all year long.

Thieves Spray

Bacteria can be easily spread from person to person by way of the surfaces in your home. By keeping these surfaces clean, you are protecting your family from bacteria and illness. Young Living’s Thieves Spray is an easy, convenient product to help clean and protect every surface in your home. This small bottle is perfect for traveling or keeping in your purse or backpack. Here are some ways to use it:

  • Spray in your garbage can or kitty litter box after each monthly cleaning for a fresh scent that lasts.
  • Use on white boards for a “like new” sparkle
  • Spray on kids toys, books, bedding, or any other item in their room to clean and refresh.
  • Use for any surface inside or outside your home that gets touched frequently by hands.

Young Living Essential Oils and Pets

I took some notes when I  had the benefit of being on a phone conference call with Dr. Melissa Shelton, DVM.  Dr. Shelton is a Holistic Vet who uses traditional veterinary care as well as holistic care.  She started using Young Living Essential Oils for her family and as a way to control odors in her home and animal hospital, which is in her home.  In her practice she has linked many animal health problems to the use of household cleaners and air fresheners.  So having a way to control odors without causing harm to her patients was very important to her.  She started diffusing a Young Living blend called Purification in her home and hospital and found that it controlled the odors really well and did not harm her pets or patients.

On a personal note after the call ended I realized that our dog Lulu has not had the chronic upset stomach problems that she was having before we moved.  We moved into our current home a few months ago and we left behind a lot of our old cleaners as well.  We used to use the wet swiffer mops every night on our kitchen floor and we no longer do that.  She used to get a really horrible upset stomach with bleeding & gas.  She has not had that once since we have been here and I am beginning to think it has to do with the changing of our cleaning products.  We now use the Thieves cleaner on our counters, floors and bathrooms – it so much better than anything you can buy in the stores.  I will do another post on Thieves and “green” cleaning options soon.

As Dr. Shelton started seeing her family benefit from using the oils she then looked at the Veterinary community to see if there was any information on using oils with animals.  What she found over and over from traditional vet care was that essential oils should not be used on animals.  BUT  Dr. Shelton would meet people who were already using YL oils on their pets and she would hear story after story of how these oils helped animals when traditional care could not. So she started educating herself and she started using them on her own pets, then she began to offer them to patients in her hospital.  All along she was able to document with blood samples and tests with before and after results of using the oils.  She is currently writing The Essential Oils Desk Reference Book for Animals.

She only uses Young Living Essential Oils, so all of the following information is based on YL oils.  One of the first thing she recommends doing is to get rid of scented products in the home, cleaners, candles (even those that are ‘natural’), air fresheners (like Fabreeze or Glade Plug-Ins), even scented kitty litter.  Of course water and diet are important factors as well so please look into giving your pets filtered or spring water and good quality food.  I’ll post Dr. Shelton’s website at the end of this post and you can refer to her site for more info on which brands to look into.

Even in the aromatherapy community many would say that oils can be used on dogs but not on cats.  Dr. Shelton has found that cats benefit from using the oils just as much as the dogs but that care must be used.  She told a story of a cat named Cowboy who had some neurological damage and a blocked bladder.  The cat could not urinate and they tried every conventional method available but nothing worked.  The cat would certainly die if it was not able to void it’s bladder but the owner did not want to put the cat down so Dr. Shelton suggested doing a ‘kitty raindrop’.  The Raindrop Technique was developed by Gary Young and it involves using 7-9 different oils all along the spine.  I have not heard of anyone using this technique on cats before Dr. Shelton.  She dilutes the oils with a carrier, such as the Young Living V6 blend, and applies the oils from tail to head (if the cat allows that) or from head to tail just like if you were petting your cat.  Cowboy started receiving daily raindrops and was soon able to pee.  When his owner went from daily to every other day raindrops Cowboy became blocked again.  So for this cat not only did the oils not hurt him they were the only thing that helped him!

Essential Oils can also be used to control fleas, ticks & heartworm problems.  For dogs Dr. Shelton suggested using the longevity oil blend either in a capsule or by adding it to their food to repel fleas and ticks.  The longevity blend is also high in antioxidants and has anti-cancer benefits as well.  For a small dog up to 20 lbs use 2-3 drops or 1 capsule, for a medium dog 25-50 lbs 3-5 drops, and for a large dog 50 lbs and over use 6-7 drops.

You can also do a raindrop monthly on your dog and put a drop of purification on your dog before going outside.  Just like people, dogs may have different reactions to the oils, one oil may work better for one dog than another, so look for  signs if the oils are bothering your dog and you can either dilute or try different oils. Other oils that could be beneficial in keeping fleas and ticks away are lemongrass, idaho tansy, palo santo, rosemary,  & oregano.  You could add these oils to a spray bottle and spray on your pet before going out.

For Heartworm first check to see when it is active in your area.  Dr. Shelton recommends using ParaFree and longevity for dogs and Ocotea for cats twice per week.  My notes on the suggested dosage are a little unclear  but this is what I have written down.  Small dogs up to 25 lbs 1/2 to full capsule, med dogs 25- 50 lbs full capsule, lg dog over 50 – 90 lbs 1 can 2-3 times per day, and for giant dogs 90+ lbs 1 capsule 3 times per day.

For pain management like arthritis she suggests using copaiba topically and orally.  Sulfurzyme and BLM (the capsules only as the powder contains xylitol, which is harmful to dogs) helps pain and surgery healing.  She also uses helichrysm.

For anxiety, which could be a training/pack issue, she uses, lavender and peace and calming.

For Lymes Disease, she suggested doing raindrops, using longevity, ocotea, life 5, Ningxia Red, omega blue, thieves and immupower.

There was so much to talk about in so little time so as you see my notes are not as complete as I would have liked.  Young Living Essential oils can also be used on horses. You can contact Dr. Shelton at her website www.crowriveranimalhospital.com if you would like to schedule a phone consult.  You can also find her past newsletters on her website which are packed with helpful information.

Do Your Essential Oils Make The Grade?

I found this on the Young Living Blog and wanted to pass this info along.  I have been thinking about how many toxins we must put in our bodies on a daily basis.  Even though I buy organic or local foods when I can we still consume toxins from our water, food & air.  One thing I know is that when I use Young Living Essential Oils it feels good.  My body kind of goes “ahhhhhhh”.  It doesn’t matter if I ingest them, inhale them or use them topically I always feel better.  The last thing I want to do is add more toxins into our lives so I use Young Living Oils because I can feel the difference and that is what is important to  me.  I do not need for anyone else to tell me if these products are good or not – my body knows – and that is good enough for me. – Francine

You may be buying lavender essential oil to treat dermatitis or tea tree oil to help with blemishes, but are you sure you are getting the real deal?  Up to 90 percent of products sold as pure plant oils actually contain synthetic ingredients.

To be sure you are using unadulterated essential oils and essential oil products (and therefore getting the full healing properties), take a closer look:

1. Do a water check.  Add a drop of essential oil to a tablespoon of water. If a milky slick appears, the oil is likely synthetic and mixed with other ingredients.

2. Take a blot test.  Place a drop of oil on paper. If the paper has a grease stain after two hours, the essential oil probably has been diluted with vegetable oils.  This test is for oil singles.  Blends usually have a carrier oil which will leave an oil stain. Oil singles, such as lavender of tea tree oil should not have vegetable oil in the bottle.

3. Read the Label.  You are NOT looking for the word “PURE” or “100% PURE.”  Pure just means the oil was not diluted with a lesser quality essential oil.  For example: lavender oil is often cut with lavendin, which has very little therapeutic quality. “Pure” does not mean it has no chemicals added to it.  In the U.S., all you need is 5% of essential oil in the bottle in order to label it “100% pure.”  You are looking for the words “GRADE A” or “GENUINE & AUTHENTIC”.
